This post has been brewing in me for some time now. I feel entitled to have an opinion on this matter now - given that in the very near future I will have to put clothing on my very own child.
Shit is UGLY. And when I say ugly, I'm talkin: Pastels, Fleece, Fluorescents, Cartoons, Bows, Ruffles, and Advertising. I realize there WILL be a time in your child's life where it has to wear its Sponge Bob Halloween costume to breakfast, lunch, dinner, and church for 3 months straight. So let's just agree that every kid needs a thrill. Thank You Halloween.
Maybe I am partial. I grew up wearing mostly things my mother sewed for me. So I am drawn to simple understated clothing without the fuss. I don't even mind a bright color here and there - its just when 5 bright colors collide into a rainbow, merge into a ruffle, and then declare something like 'Mommy's best girl!' that I want to vomit.
When we were in France for three months I marveled at all the little ones running around. I had never seen anything like it. They all looked straight out of a timepiece movie. Their clothes looked sturdy. Well-made. They mimicked the styles of their parents clothing. Their shoes simple - leather mostly. I think one of the biggest problems in the US is cost. People can't afford to dress their children like little French when there are 3 for $10Spiderman t-shirts at Wal-Mart. There is very little of that in France. At least in the parts of the country we visited. Those types of clothes here in the states would be considered boutique clothing. And there they are no different than the prices you would find at The Gap.
I love for the clothes to show-off the kid. Not the other way around. Again. Simple. Classic. THIS is what I'm talking about:
Okay, so I'm a little obsessed with everything Kate Quinn Organics. She knows whats up.
Here are some other sites of patterns and clothing that I love.
Now who doesnt love some Monkey Pants?
And boy does it ever look like I could dress up a hamburger here. Now, if I could just learn to SEW. I've got about as many knitted blankets a child could need at this point.
I just hate so much of the stuff that's out there. And the stuff I do like is so expensive. (Unless you can score those same designer duds on sale at kick ass retailers like WILD DILL - my new best friend second to Sparrow and Bull). Guess the sewing machine and I are really going to have to have a heart to heart this summer.
So help me.
